To me, it's likely something else (than merely "wild animals") that come during famines/war, etc.
It's significant enough (numerically)...to specifically be identified with war, and hunger: to destroy a fourth of the earth! So it's not merely, "wild animals".
When you look up the root Greek used...it implies ("from hell" or "evil").
Given that many (wicked) things will come upon the earth from hell...as the woes continue, I think the odds are likely it's related.
One area that comes to mind...(as spoken in the books of Enoch and Jubilees and Jaser, among others): are that the spirits of the giants and the hybrids are buried "in/on the earth", in the rocks/deserts/mountains for "70 GENERATIONS" from the "days of Jared".
This time period is not out of the question here/now...as we approach or are in (the last generation).
